Two Hearts

Last weekend I went to friend's place and ended up having a game of Castle Crashers (among others).

As those familiar with Castle Crashers would know, there come points in the game where the players rescue captured princesses - only to fight each other to see who gets the kiss from said princess. And when these moments come between myself and my buds they become contests of the ferocious variety. And the kind that I never win.

That was until the weekend where I finally manage to win such a contest. And not only once but twice!

Seems that every dog has his day

Kiss Me You Fool

So far, this has been the only time my hapless blue knight has achieved a kiss from one of the princesses.

Still, at least I have a tonne of cash to go with it XD

Castle has Crashed

Lately, in between my progress through Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky, I've been playing Castle Crashers.

This is not my first time playing Castle Crashers - Previously it was something I played at my friend's place on his Xbox. But now, I have Castle Crashers on Steam and I'm going all the way through it.
Currently I am playing this with the same people I played ESO with. Funny thing to say: It's like we traded well realised, immersive worlds for cartoonish graphics and general absurdity.

Of course this only solidifies Castle Crashers' reputation as being one of, if not the, best multi-player games in existence. However compared to the previous multi-player games, Castle Crashers has been something of a change of pace: Previously, in this group, I have been the lowest leveled. I've lagged behind everyone else who are well ahead of me and, despite my best efforts, I can never catch up and/or keep the pace. But with Castle Crashers, it's the exact opposite: I am well ahead of everyone else in the leveling department. I suppose this can be attributed to the fact that I was the only one who started with a controller (as opposed to to a keyboard), but it does make a welcome change that the guy who was behind everyone else suddenly came out in front (Steven Bradbury anyone?).

Only drawback is that everyone tends to gang up on me in the Princess fights, making me the first one to go down but still.....

Rise of the Guardians

Another game has been struck from my Hall of Shame: Guardian Heroes!

It's difficult to call this one completed: I may have unlocked five of the seven endings but I've unlocked all the characters so that's close enough.

So what can I say about this game that I haven't before? Well it's interesting to see this game from the perspective of time. I didn't play this game during the Saturn era and I am only playing this game for the first time and from a modern perspective.
And the game is a lot of fun: I did enjoy brawlers back in the day and I enjoyed the art style, multiple planes, and story mode. Of particular note is how Guardian Heroes does a lot of things differently with the brawler genre that one can only wonder why it hadn't been thought of before - or how you, the player ever got by without such changes.
Okay so some of the boss fights were annoying with them laying the smackdown without giving me a chance to fight back - but it is an amusing thought to think that whilst I'm spamming attacks, the guy on the other side of the TV screen is doing the exact same thing.

Also of note is how this game's DNA has been utilized with games that have come since. I see the gorgeous anime-style artwork (which still holds up really well today mind you) and I think of the similar art style in Guilty Gear. I see the then innovative use of branching paths and RPG elements and I think of Castle Crashers (I wonder of the makers of Castle Crashers made their game based on the annoyance of not having Guardian Heroes readily available?).

All in all, Guardian heroes was a lot of fun and I sincerely hope Sega take notice to a point where they make more games from their catalog readily available.

Heroes of a new world

Recently I've been playing a lot of Guardian Heroes.

This is one of the many games that was ported to the XBLA from the Sega Saturn. It is my belief that buying such games will prompt more conversions of some of the other lost gems that were on the Saturn - a misguided belief to be sure but you never know...
What is particularly impressive that this is a conversion that actually enhances the original: Aside from the inevitable graphical update and the inclusion of achievements, the game keeps track of the branching paths that have already been visited, cutscenes are skippable, there's a better translation and the Versus multiplayer has been increased from six to twelve. Truly a shining example of how to make a game from the mid-nineties and making it better whilst staying true to the original (it makes one wonder how numerous other such games got it so wrong).

As for the game itself, this is one game I've come into completely blind - The only thing I knew was that was a Saturn game and one of the best games on the system (and considering the amount of trash that was on the system that's saying a lot). What I wasn't expecting was to seeing some superb anime-esque art - much of which still looks great eighteen years later. Nor was I expecting to a real entertaining brawler with RPG elements and branching paths - granted this is a common sight for brawlers today (Castle Crashers anyone?) but to see it being down in a game from 1996 was a revelation indeed.

Not much else I can say except that has, so far, been something of a surprise package. I can't say that I'm one to go into a game completely in the dark but in this time I think it has paid off. How fitting it is then that finding a diamond in the rough should be a Saturn game.

XBLA Wish List

Seeing as the XBLA likes to dust off old arcades games and put them up for offer, I present a list of suggestions I would like to see put up for purchase.
I played these games when I was a kid and love to see them on XBLA - Probably may never happen but we can always dream....

Vendetta
A beat-em-up made by Konami made in 1991. Whilst the four-way beat-em-up was popularized by Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, I do remember this one quite fondly. What made this one stand out was the wide variety of weapons, which indeed made the game heaps more fun. Also noteworthy is the sense of humor that was quite lacking in the genre. I mean come on, where else can you have Mike Tyson, Hulk Hogan, Jean Claude Van-Damme and Mr. T all banding together to beat up some punks?! Sure the presence of the gay dudes that dry hump the player characters may cause some offense but I will gladly pay for the censored US version of Vendetta for, if anything, to just play the damn thing again.

Golden Axe 2: Revenge of Death Adder
Well the original Golden Axe found it's way onto XBLA so why not it's follow up? Without question the high point of the entire series, RoDA takes what works in GA and improves it on many levels. Better graphics, more beasties to ride, more foes to crush, gorgeous environments, magic combos, multiple paths, and even catapults! Again, having this not follow it's older brother onto XBLA is just mind-boggling. And considering that was never released for a home console in it's day, this is hands down one game that needs a second chance.

Alien vs Predator
Developed by Capcom in 1994, this is one game I played at every opportunity and enjoyed every minute of it. Take two marines (one of them being Arnie's character from the first predator movie) and two Predators and go kill some Alien arse. Some detailed graphics, great music, and the mind-bending opportunity to mow down so many xenomorph scum at once is indeed an attractive package. Plus, seeing as there exists crummy movies and crummy games based on the AvP concept, I would certainly welcome this, the best of the lot, to the XBLA.

Sunset Riders
Well seeing as westerns are enjoying a resurgence (in the form of Call of Juraez and Red Dead Redemption) it would make sense to see this game on the XBLA. Again this is four-way game - and console games are really more fun when played with a group of people (you only need to look at Castle Crashers for proof). But, unlike the three listed above, this is a shooter and has lot's of personality to boot. Humorous moments are filled with the game which are hilarious to watch and it's fun to see how much inspiration is drawn from old Western movies. Indeed, special mention must be made of the game's willingness to not take itself seriously and comes out heaps more fun because of it.
